The Minister of Agriculture Luís Capoulas Santos, visited OLA last July
The minister of Agriculture, Forests and Rural Development, Luís Capoulas Santos, visited OLA in the company of the City Mayor, José Calixto and his team. On this session, the Minister had the opportunity to explore the Alqueva night sky with the help of OLA’s guides.
180 visitors observed the Lunar Eclipse of the 27th of July from OLA
On the 27th of July, many were the ones that arrived at OLA to observe the longest lunar eclipse of the 21th century. This event registered 180 visitors and had a strong presence of the media in our facilities. Besides the eclipse, there was also a talk about the “European Southern Observatory” by Hugo Messias from ESO and a presentation about Moon Eclipses and how to photograph them.

Stargazing sessions
From Tuesday to Saturday (every night in August except 17-19) at 21:30
A guided tour of the magnificent night sky of Monsaraz where one can learn the orientation by the Northern Star, identify constellations and their legends, relate colours of stars with their ages, observe star clusters, nebulas and distant galaxies with the help of telescopes. The explanations are provided in simple language by OLA’s guides.

Young Astronomers
In these activities, the young scientists learn more about Science and Astronomy in an amusing and relaxed environment.

3 August – Astrophotographer for one night
In just two hours, the participants are introduced and practice in our park the definitions that cameras must have in order to give the first steps into landscape astrophotography. Registration limited to a maximum of 5 people.
10 and 11 August – Perseids Meteor Shower 2018
This year the Perseids take place during ideal observing conditions, with the New Moon occurring on the 11th of August. Bring with you a jacket and either a blanket or a yoga mattress, and come learn more about Perseids and the Universe while you watch this natural show with us.
17-19 August – 25th Astrofesta at Constância
The Astrofesta happens this year at Constância. This has been the major annual meeting of amateur and professional astronomers of the country for the last 24 years. During three days, the Astrofesta promises to shake the Centro de Ciência Viva de Constância. OLA will be present at this meeting.
14 September  – Astronomer for one night
The participants are the astronomers on duty. They learn how to use the main telescope of OLA, to acquire images and process them in order to obtain superb images of distant galaxies and nebulas that they can take back home. Registration limited to a maximum of 5 people.
21 September – Astrophotographer for one night
In just two hours, the participants are introduced and practice in our park the definitions that cameras must have in order to give the first steps into landscape astrophotography. Registration limited to a maximum of 5 people.
28 September  – European Researchers Night
For the second year, OLA joins the European Researchers Night. A night dedicated to the projects and scientific development made by portuguese scientists on several different areas. We have plenty of scientific activities for all ages.
