Nobel Prize in Physics 2017 – Gravitational waves

Dr Francisco Lobo (IA/U. Lisboa)

The Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Rainer Weiss, Kip Thorne and Barry Barish for their “decisive contributions to the LIGO detector and the observation of gravitational waves”.

The discovery of gravitational waves is one the last pieces remaining to the confirmation of Einstein’s gravity. This theory predicts that cataclysmic events such as the collision of two black holes can emit gravitational waves that propagate throughout the Universe.

We will make a brief historical revision of this fantastic discovery and discuss its importance.
