Galaxies, the building blocks of our Universe

Dr Fernando Buitrago

Institute of Astrophysics and Space Sciences

In this course, concepts such as the classification of galaxies, their formation and evolution and their spacial distribution are discussed.

-Basic concepts (magnitude, redshift, astronomical filters, telescopes)

– Our place in the Universe: from the Greek to our current conception of the Universe

16h00 Break

– Definition

– The parts of a galaxy

– Galaxy classification

-Typical quantities in galaxies

Our Galaxy the Milky Way

Large scale structure in the Universe: cosmic voids and galaxy clusters

19h30: Dinner

21h30:  Stargazing session with telescopes and star guides

Evolution of galaxies in space and time

– Panta rei: the continuous change of galaxies in the Universe

– The border of our current knowledge

Does it make sense to know this in our current society?

12h00 End of the course

Fernando Buitrago has a first degree in Physics and Cumputational Engineering from the University of Salamanca. After his master degreein the telescopes of the Canary Islands, he obtained his PhD at the University of Nottingham studying the largest galaxies in the Universe. He worked for several years at the Royal Edingburgh and currently he is a researcher of the Institute of Astrophysics and Space Sciences.
