Seniors on the move (Séniores a Mexer) at OLA
In June, OLA has continued its collaboration with the Municipality of Reguengos de Monsaraz, in the context of the program “Séniores a Mexer (Seniors on the move)”. During the course of 5 sessions, around 144 participants got to know OLA’s project and a lot more about the night sky they have always seen above their heads.
Elementary School students visited OLA
In June OLA has had new visits from schools, this time from elementary schools. On the 18th of June, about 45 students from Odivelas had the chance to observe the planets Venus, Jupiter and Saturn, before an overnight sleeping at OLA. On the 20th of June it was then the turn of Arraiolos students to come to OLA to appreciate and learn more about our star, the Sun.
TripAdvisor 2018 Certificate of Excelence
Last month, OLA has reached 100 evaluations on TripAdvisor! Over the last two years, our visitors have rated OLA positively placing it in first place on the activities to do in Monsaraz, as well as in the whole Évora district and, in first place among Alentejo’s Museums. A big thank you to all our visitors who evaluated and with that helped to let the World know about OLA.

Stargazing sessions
From Tuesday to Saturday at 21:30
A walk through the night sky of the Dark Sky Alqueva Reserve, where one can learn the orientation by the Northern Star, identify constellations and their legends, relate colours of stars with their ages, observe star clusters, nebulas and distant galaxies with the help of telescopes. The explanations are provided in simple language by the OLA’s guides.
Saturdays at 16:30
Young Astronomers
In these activities, the young scientists learn more about Science and Astronomy in an amusing and relaxed environment.

July 7th – Landscape Astrophotography Course
Landscape Astrophotography Course where concepts such as photographic sensors, proper objectives, the exposure triangle applied to the night photography and technics of capturing Startrails and Milky Way shots. The course also has an introduction on image processing.
July 13th to 14th – Astronomer for one night
In the night of July 13th to 14th the participants are the astronomers on duty. They learn how to use the main telescope of OLA, to acquire images and process them in order to obtain superb images of distant galaxies and nebulas that they can take back home. Registration limited to a maximum of 5 people.
July 20th to 21st – Astrophotographer for one night
In just two hours, the participants are introduced and practice in our park the definitions that cameras must have in order to give the first steps into landscape astrophotography. Registration limited to a maximum of 5 people.
July 27th – Lunar Eclipse and Mars Opposition
On July 27th, when night falls, the Full Moon will rise eclipsed by Earth’s shadow, which will make its observation a challenge!
OLA offers a special thematic session on this Total Lunar Eclipse night and a presentation by the astronomer of the European Southern Observatory, Hugo Messias, at 18h30.
August 3rd to 4th – Astrophotographer for one night
In just two hours, the participants are introduced and practice in our park the definitions that cameras must have in order to give the first steps into landscape astrophotography. Registration limited to a maximum of 5 people.
August 10th and 11th – Perseids Meteor Shower 2018
This year the Perseids take place during ideal observing conditions, with the New Moon occurring on the 11th of August. Bring with you a jacket and either a blanket or a yoga mattress, and come learn more about Perseids and the Universe while you watch this natural show with us.
Night of August 17th to 18th – Astronomer for one night
In the night of August 17th to 18th the participants are the astronomers on duty. They learn how to use the main telescope of OLA, to acquire images and process them in order to obtain superb images of distant galaxies and nebulas that they can take back home. Registration limited to a maximum of 5 people.
